Myrtle Beach's population is a good 20% strong with retirees. Each year more and more adults ages 60+ are finding Myrtle Beach a great place to live and retire. Many come to escape the cold or the extreme heat of the far south, purchase a place on the beach so they can step outside in the mornings and enjoy a beautiful sunrise. When you live in Myrtle Beach you come to a temperate climate, you enjoy a relaxed lifestyle, enjoy warm summer days, with plenty of sunshine still in the winter months. Many think that when you get older you don't do as much, well that's not true for most, as there are many opportunities here like local churches, civic groups, arts, shopping, and governmental entities. Myrtle Beach is on of the Top 100 cities to retire in according to Where to Retire magazine. The Wall Street Journal also named Myrtle Beach as one of the hottest retirement areas in the country.

You can volunteer in a school or hospital, serve on a board or council, start a fund-raising drive, and participate in cultural activities. Long Bay Symphony is partially made up of retirees who played in other larger symphonies in other cities or who were in the music business formerly. The Grand Strand Players is a 55 and older group who does some acting and performs 3 productions a year. You also can get involved in the Waccamaw Carving Club, Grand Strand Concert Band, Long Bay Photography Club, or the Waccamaw Arts and Crafts Guild.

Horry County senior citizens have their own newspaper, Fifty Plus; their own annual trade show, the Lifestyles Expo which is held at the Convention Center off Oak Street; and they also have their own production company which produces a 30 minute segment on Cox Cable.
